The idea
Sfendona invites travellers to share the real life of Greek villages: the table, the land, the crafts, the festivals, the stories and the language. Not mass tourism, but encounters that benefit travellers and villages alike. The aim: hosts who can make a decent living doing what they love, in their own language.
The name
In Greek, σφεντόνα (sfendóna) is the slingshot, a children's toy carved from olive wood. In ancient Greek, σφενδόνη also named the curved end of the stadiums where the Games were held. With Sfendona, you aim, you let go and you progress.
Three Greek values
-
Φιλοξενία (philoxenia), hospitality
Welcomed as a friend, not a customer.
-
Φιλότιμο (philotimo), honour
Fair prices and promises kept.
-
Φιλοσοφία (philosophia), wisdom
Taking time to talk and understand.
A real-life game
The trip is a series of routes, from discovery to mastery: the table (cooking with a grandmother, the olive harvest), the land (trails, hidden chapels), the hands (crafts, carving your own slingshot), the festival (dances, village feasts) and the stories (myths, elders' memories).
- Printed challenge cards, stamped by the host: every completed challenge earns a pebble. No smartphone needed: the cards are enough.
- Augmented reality, on two tracks: the card track, with no screen, and an optional digital track, where each card's QR code opens a companion app (trip preparation, Greek practice, help on the spot). The companion is first a person from the village, perhaps later an AI; it always points you to people, never replaces them. Both tracks play together with the same rewards, and everything in the app also exists on paper or from a person.
- When a challenge involves a local, both are rewarded, symbolically: nobody is paid to be friendly, but hosts are paid for their skills.
- Each host decides whether to take part, and how far.
Language
For everyone: phrase cards with everyday expressions, their pronunciation and meaning. At participating places, one question opens the game:
« Να κάνω προσπάθεια στα ελληνικά; » “Can I try in Greek?”
If the host says yes, the exchange becomes a challenge; if not, it's simple courtesy.
For learners: an Απλά Ελληνικά module, clear and natural Greek, which we intend to develop. You learn before you leave; in Greece there's no classroom: the stay in Greek is the final exam.
The trip
A short first visit for a taste, then return visits to go deeper, with progress that follows you. Stays could run all year, with a special place for autumn, winter and spring (the olive harvest, carnival, Easter), when villages have time: a priority Greece shares. Travellers could also bring a small gift or a recipe from home.
Our commitments
Clear prices, never any pressure selling, a code of honour written with the villages, private feedback rather than public ratings, dialogue and mediation if something goes wrong, and the aim that most of each stay goes to local hosts, guides and producers.
Beyond Greece
The plan is for Sfendona to be born in Greece, where the concept would be developed and tested first. The same rules could later take root elsewhere, in independent editions with local routes, villages and producers, led by people from those places and possibly under a local name. Nothing is fixed: now is a good time to bring your ideas.
Where the project stands
The site has been live since September 2026. We're gauging interest before launching a first pilot stay.
Public interest responses are not being collected yet. The page is not ready to share for market research until a submission path is connected and tested.
What we learn from your responses will shape whether and how anything goes further. Sharing interest does not reserve a place.
Interest form
Traveller, host, producer, creative or simply curious? A few optional questions. No account, no commitment, and no email required unless you want occasional updates.
Thank you — that helps.
Your answers go into our research notes. Sharing interest does not reserve a place, join a waitlist, or confirm a trip. If you asked for updates, we'll only write when there's something genuinely worth sharing.
